How to Prepare Your Heating System for Sudden Temperature Drops in North Texas

Ideally, you should avoid using your heating system before an annual tune-up. Unfortunately, sudden temperature drops can force you to turn the heat on sooner than expected. When that’s the case, following the handful of simple steps below will help you prepare your heating system for cold weather in North Texas:

Test the Thermostat

Anytime you plan to use your heating system, it's a good idea to check your thermostat. Make sure you have spare batteries, and be ready to replace the ones in the unit at the start of the season.

To test the unit, set the thermostat to heat on auto and adjust the setting by a few degrees. If the heating system doesn't start a cycle, the thermostat might need calibration.

Change the Air Filter

Operating your heating system with a dirty filter can compromise efficiency and cause heating malfunctions. You probably didn't replace the filter at the end of the previous winter, so now is an ideal time to check it. Replace the old filter for clean, efficient heating.

Light the Pilot

As you prepare your heating system for cold weather in North Texas, light the pilot. Turn the gas supply valve to the on position and use a match or lighter to ignite the pilot. Once it lights, you can adjust the setting for the furnace burners.

Clean the Registers

When dust and debris block access to your ducts, your home’s heating efficiency will suffer. A backup of treated air can also cause furnace malfunctions and create fire hazards. Use a damp cloth to wipe dust and cobwebs off the registers. Check the ducts for debris or damage to see if you need professional duct cleaning services.
